Tennis Premier League Set to Shape the Future of Sri Lankan Tennis

The future of tennis in Sri Lanka is entering an exciting new era with the official launch of the Sri Lanka Tennis Premier League (SLTPL)—a landmark initiative aimed at building a sustainable and dynamic future for the sport across the island.
Endorsed by the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA), the inaugural SLTPL will be held from 27–30 August 2026 at the SLTA Hard Courts in Colombo. The tournament will feature eight city-based franchises representing Colombo, Jaffna, Batticaloa, Kurunegala, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, and Negombo, showcasing some of the country's most promising tennis talent.
More than just a competitive tournament, the SLTPL has been created as a long-term platform to strengthen Sri Lankan tennis. Operating on a not-for-profit model, all surplus revenue generated by the league will be invested in a dedicated Tennis Development Fund. This fund will support infrastructure improvements, grassroots development, coaching programmes, and athlete development initiatives throughout Sri Lanka.
Speaking at the official launch, SLTA President Iqbal Bin Issack emphasized that while Sri Lanka has no shortage of talented players and passionate supporters, the sport has long lacked a sustainable financial model to support its continued growth. The SLTPL aims to bridge that gap by creating a commercially viable league that not only raises the profile of tennis but also generates lasting benefits for the sport.
SLTPL Director Roshan Silva described the league as much more than a sporting competition. He highlighted its vision of fostering a vibrant tennis culture that connects players, fans, sponsors, and local communities while inspiring the next generation of athletes.
The league has already begun making a positive impact, with the installation of international-standard floodlights at the SLTA Hard Courts currently underway. This marks the first major infrastructure project supported through the SLTPL initiative and represents an important step toward improving playing conditions and expanding opportunities for players.
In addition to developing athletes and facilities, the SLTPL is expected to attract increased corporate investment into Sri Lankan tennis. With its growing appeal and strong community focus, the league provides businesses with an opportunity to support a meaningful national sporting initiative while contributing directly to the future success of the game.
